What Is a Private Key?
Understand how private keys work, when to use a WIF private key, and how to securely import it into your ECX wallet.
What Is a Private Key?
A private key is a secret cryptographic key that gives you complete control over a blockchain address and the assets it contains.
Anyone with access to your private key can access and spend the funds associated with that address.
For this reason, private keys should always remain private.
Private Key vs Recovery Phrase
Although both can provide access to your assets, they serve different purposes.
| Recovery Phrase | Private Key |
|---|---|
| Controls an entire wallet | Controls a single address |
| Usually consists of 12 or 24 words | Usually represented as a WIF string |
| Can restore multiple addresses | Restores only one address |
| Recommended for full wallet backups | Commonly used for individual address imports |
What Is WIF?
Wallet Import Format (WIF) is a standardized way of representing a private key as a text string.
Many Bitcoin-compatible wallets use WIF when exporting individual private keys.
ECXIUM supports importing compatible WIF private keys for managing eligible ECX.
When Should You Use a Private Key?
Importing a private key is useful when:
If you have a Recovery Phrase, importing the phrase is generally recommended because it restores the complete wallet.
- You control a single blockchain address.
- You exported a WIF private key from a compatible wallet.
- You want to access ECX associated with that address.
- You do not have a Recovery Phrase for the wallet.
How to Import a WIF Private Key
Select Import Wallet.
Choose Private Key (WIF).
Paste your WIF private key.
Confirm the import.
Your ECX wallet will become available.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can someone steal my ECX if they know my private key?
Yes. Anyone with your private key has full control over that address.
Is a Recovery Phrase better than a private key?
For most users, yes. A Recovery Phrase restores an entire wallet and is the recommended backup method.
Can I import multiple private keys?
No. Each imported WIF private key represents one blockchain address. To manage multiple addresses, import a Recovery Phrase instead.
Can ECXIUM see my private key?
No. Private keys are processed locally within your browser and are never transmitted to ECXIUM servers.
Can I change my private key?
No. Private keys are permanently associated with the blockchain address they control.
