ECX Replay Protection Explained
Learn what transaction replay means after a Bitcoin fork, why BTC and ECX may need to be safely separated, and how ECXIUM handles replay protection for eligible Bitcoin wallet imports.
ECXIUM automatically handles safe coin splitting and replay protection where required when you import an eligible Bitcoin wallet.
What Is ECX Replay Protection?
ECX replay protection is a mechanism used to prevent a transaction intended for one blockchain from being unintentionally valid on another chain that shares the same transaction history. ECXIUM handles the required wallet-side replay protection and safe coin separation automatically for eligible Bitcoin wallet imports.
Why Can Replay Happen After a Bitcoin Fork?
A Bitcoin fork starts from shared blockchain history. At the fork point, the original Bitcoin chain and the new ECX chain can reference the same earlier ownership records.
After the fork, BTC and ECX are separate assets on separate networks, but some transaction data may still resemble data that both chains can understand.
That overlap is why replay risk can matter before the assets are safely separated.
Key Idea. Shared history can create replay risk. Replay protection and safe separation help BTC and ECX move independently after the fork.
Read the Bitcoin fork guideWhat Is a Replay Attack?
A replay attack happens when a transaction made for one blockchain is reproduced and accepted on another compatible chain without the user intending that second action.
This is a transaction-safety issue. It does not mean the wallet keys have been exposed, but it can matter when two chains share compatible pre-fork history.
Replay protection is designed to prevent or control that unintended cross-chain transaction effect.
Replay Protection vs Coin Splitting
Replay protection and coin splitting are closely related, but they describe different parts of safe post-fork asset management. Read more in the Split BTC and ECX guide: /guides/split-btc-and-ecx/.
| Concept | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Replay protection | Prevents or controls a transaction from being unintentionally valid across both chains. |
| Coin splitting / separation | Creates a state in which BTC and ECX can be transacted independently without relying on the same spend history. |
| ECXIUM workflow | Automatically handles the wallet-side safe separation and replay-protection process where required for eligible Bitcoin wallet imports. |
How ECXIUM Handles Replay Protection
Import an Eligible Bitcoin Wallet
Import the compatible Recovery Phrase or WIF private key into ECXIUM.
Detect the Corresponding ECX
ECXIUM derives or loads the corresponding ECX wallet information for the active ECX network.
Identify the Required Separation State
ECXIUM determines the wallet-side handling needed before BTC and ECX can be managed independently.
Apply Safe Split and Replay Protection
ECXIUM automatically performs the required safe coin-separation and replay-protection workflow where required.
Manage ECX Independently
After safe separation, ECX can be managed on the ECX network without treating BTC and ECX as one asset.
Replay Protection Flow
The ECXIUM workflow is designed around safe separation before independent BTC and ECX transaction management.
Does ECX Have Replay Protection?
The ECX protocol includes opt-in replay protection rather than assuming every transaction is automatically separated by the protocol alone.
In ECXIUM, the wallet handles the required safe split and replay-protection workflow where required when an eligible Bitcoin wallet is imported.
That means users should understand the distinction between protocol capability and wallet-side handling.
Do I Need to Split BTC and ECX Manually?
No manual split process is required in the supported ECXIUM workflow.
This does not mean safe separation is unnecessary. It means ECXIUM performs the required wallet-side steps automatically where required.
The split guide explains the relationship between coin separation, replay protection and independent post-fork transactions.

How to Split BTC and ECXDoes Importing a Bitcoin Wallet Move My BTC?
No. Importing a Bitcoin wallet into ECXIUM does not move, exchange or convert BTC.
BTC remains on the Bitcoin blockchain. ECX is separate and exists on the ECX network.
ECXIUM uses compatible key material to access the corresponding ECX wallet information and handle safe ECX-side separation where required.

Import Bitcoin Wallet for ECXWhen Does Replay Protection Matter?
Replay protection matters when a forked asset still shares transaction history or validation behavior with the original chain.
- When BTC and ECX originate from shared pre-fork transaction history.
- Before independently spending assets on chains where a transaction could otherwise be valid on both.
- When importing an eligible Bitcoin wallet to access corresponding ECX.
- When a wallet has not yet completed the required safe coin-separation process.
Alpha, Beta and Mainnet
Alpha and Beta use practice ECX. Mainnet establishes permanent ECX. Read the full launch-stage guide at /guides/ecx-alpha-beta-mainnet/.
| Network | Approx. BTC block | ECX type |
|---|---|---|
| ECX Alpha Testnet | ~963,648 | Practice ECX |
| ECX Beta Testnet | 967,680 | Practice ECX |
| ECX Mainnet | ~973,728 | Permanent ECX |

Frequently Asked Questions
What is ECX replay protection?
ECX replay protection helps prevent a transaction intended for one blockchain from being unintentionally valid on another chain that shares the same transaction history.
Why is replay protection needed after a Bitcoin fork?
A Bitcoin fork can create separate assets that still share pre-fork transaction history. Replay protection helps those assets be managed independently after the fork.
What is a replay attack?
A replay attack is when a transaction intended for one chain is reproduced and accepted on another compatible chain without the user intending that second transaction.
Does ECXIUM handle replay protection automatically?
Yes. For eligible Bitcoin wallet imports, ECXIUM handles the required wallet-side safe split and replay-protection workflow where required.
Do I need to split BTC and ECX manually?
No manual split process is required in the supported ECXIUM workflow. ECXIUM performs the wallet-side safe separation steps automatically where required.
Does importing my Bitcoin wallet move BTC?
No. Importing a Bitcoin wallet into ECXIUM does not move, exchange or convert BTC. BTC remains on the Bitcoin blockchain.
Are BTC and ECX the same asset after the fork?
No. BTC and ECX are separate assets on separate networks after the fork.
Does the ECX protocol automatically split BTC and ECX?
No. The ECX protocol includes opt-in replay protection, while ECXIUM handles the required wallet-side safe split and replay-protection workflow where required.
Can I access ECX before splitting coins myself?
With ECXIUM, you do not need to perform a manual split yourself. Import an eligible Bitcoin wallet and ECXIUM handles the required wallet-side process where required.
Is replay protection the same as coin splitting?
No. Replay protection prevents or controls unintended cross-chain validity, while coin splitting creates an independent spend state for BTC and ECX.
Import Your Bitcoin Wallet Safely
Use ECXIUM to import eligible Bitcoin wallet credentials and let the wallet handle safe ECX-side separation where required.
